So, (almost) any core gets (almost) all of RetroArch features (e.g., state-of-the-art shaders, latency-minimizing/reducing settings, exclusive fullscreen, real-time rewind, runahead, savestate undo/redo, stable/fluid audio and video sync, etc.), just by virtue of running through it. This is a RetroArch subreddit populated by a self-selecting cohort of pro-RetroArch users and a few anti-RetroArch hater-trolls, so it's bound to be a pretty unscientific poll :Pįrom a technical standpoint, RetroArch loads the cores (usually emulators) as a dynamic library and basically replaces the program's own user-facing bits (i.e., input/output) with its own. What can sometimes happen is that a new standalone emulator which has a better/newer way to emulate a system is not yet available as a RetroArch core, for a multitude of reasons. RetroArch gives the core full access to the resources without standing in the way. That being said, there should be no performance difference between a standalone emulator and a RetroArch core. Cool, isn't it? It's no wonder most emulators today have their RetroArch core version available. Also the users benefit from a nice and familiar interface which is common among all supported platforms. This way, everyone can focus on developing what they do best, without the need to repeat most of the work. providing things like an UI, managing content playlists, system drivers, mapping input devices and save files, setting preferences for audio and rendering, etc.Ī standalone emulator would in any case need to take care of all this on its own to be usable, so it only makes sense that an application like RetroArch does it instead, and then emulators can be developed in the form of headless cores, which can be then tightly integrated with RetroArch. It will do the heavy lifting that any emulator would have to do on itself anyways, e.g. First of all, RetroArch is not an all-in-one emulator.
